Air Quality Improvements

Breathing clean air, whether indoors or outdoors is essential for good health. A significant number of Americans spend most of their time indoors either at home, office, school, or in other buildings. These indoor spaces can contain pollutants that can cause eye irritation, headaches, fatigue, and allergies. Some more serious pollutants can cause long term health conditions. Due to these reasons, it is important to always have clean indoor air.

There are five easy ways you can improve the quality of air in your home, that include the following:

  1. Clean or Replace Air Filters: Air filters trap air pollutants and ensure indoor air is clean to breathe. Indoor air undergoes recycling in the duct system, and over time, the air filters can acquire dirt and can clog. Dirty air filters can damage your HVAC system and add unnecessary pollutants to the air in the room.
  2. Replace Your Air Conditioner Filter: An air conditioner filter prevents debris from getting into the air conditioner and damaging it. When the air filter is damaged or worn out, it will allow dirt and debris entry into the home which will lower indoor air quality and can also damage the system motor or fan.
  3. Clean Air Ducts: All the air in the home passes through the air ducts; hence they should always be clean. Experts recommend cleaning the air ducts in your home every 3-5 years, however this depends on where you live, as some areas are dirtier than others, and your air ducts may require more regular cleaning.
  4. Maintain an Ideal Level of Humidity: According to the EPA, your indoor area should have relative humidity levels below 60%, ideally between 30% - 50%. When it is too humid in your house you may need a dehumidifier, as the untreated humid/moist air can result in mold growth and wood rot. On the other hand, indoor air that is too dry can cause dry eyes and sinus problems for your family members, so in this case you may need to install a humidifier. Obtaining ideal humidity levels can also cause a decrease in your electricity bills.
  5. Introduce Live Plants into Your Living Area: - Live plants purify indoor air. Plants also refresh the air through their different scents. You can experiment with herbs and flowers.
